Troubleshooting and Repair of Edge Pump System – August 2024

Jim Moran

Reason for the Visit

On August 16, 2024, GL Pools was called out to address issues with an edge pump at a residential property in Chula Vista, California. The client, Regan, had been experiencing problems with the pump failing to prime properly, resulting in the system shutting down. Additionally, the trough, which is essential for maintaining the proper water levels, was not filling correctly. These issues appeared to be interconnected, as low water levels in the trough can contribute to pump priming issues, making it crucial to investigate both problems simultaneously.

What We Found

Upon arrival, our technician confirmed that the edge pump was struggling to prime and would shut off during operation. The insufficient water level in the trough was also a significant concern, likely exacerbating the pump’s issues. Without proper water flow and pressure, the pump couldn’t operate efficiently, putting the entire system at risk of more severe damage if left unaddressed.

Solution Steps Taken

To address the interconnected issues plaguing the edge pump and trough system, we took a systematic approach to diagnose and resolve the problems. By focusing on key components that influence the pump’s ability to function properly, we were able to restore the system’s efficiency and ensure long-term reliability.

  • Replaced the Start Capacitor: The first step in restoring the edge pump’s functionality was to replace the start capacitor. This component is essential for getting the pump up and running, and its failure was a primary cause of the priming issues.
  • Replaced Suction Side Union: After getting the pump to start, we noticed that the O-rings on the suction side union were extremely flat, which could lead to air leaks and further priming problems. We replaced the thread half of the suction side union to ensure a proper seal and eliminate any potential air leaks.
  • System Priming and Testing: With the new capacitor and O-rings in place, the pump was successfully primed, and the system was tested for proper operation. The pump now functions smoothly, ensuring efficient water circulation.
  • Client Education and System Programming: To prevent future issues, we provided Regan with a quick overview of how their pool system operates. We also helped program the schedules to ensure the system runs optimally, giving the client peace of mind while they consider further service options.
